Ferry Terminal Berth

 Project: Swartz Bay

Location: Swartz Bay, Berth No. 1, British Columbia

Project Type: Development, detailed design, and construction supervision of a new ferry terminal for BC Ferry Corporation's new S-Class Ferries

Client: BC Ferry Corporation

To accommodate BC Ferry Corporation's new S-Class Ferries, Berth No. 1 at Swartz Bay was completely rebuilt. The main components comprise of a new double ramp, berthing structures, and vehicle and pedestrian access trestles. VJA was retained by BC Ferry Corporation to carry out detailed design and construction supervision for the new automated double ramp (as shown in the accompanying photographs).

The design of the new marine structure was carried out by VJA under an alternative design-build joint-venture submission with Fraser River Pile & Dredge Ltd. acting as the marine contractor. The bid was selected by the BC Ferry Corporation over the original tender design on the basis of technical merit and substantial cost saving. The marine structures consist of four pre-cast concrete berthing and mooring dolphins, two pile supported concrete wingwalls, and for maintenance vehicles and personnel, pre-stressed concrete and steel access trestles. The dolphins are constructed of open cell concrete units, stacked on a level tremie concrete base, filled with sand, and anchored into the underlying bedrock.
